The renowned Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS) will be permanently cancelled after over a century of showcasing automotive innovation. The decision, announced by event organizers on Friday, marks the end of an era for what was once a pivotal event in the global auto industry.
A Storied Legacy Since 1905
First held in 1905, the Geneva Motor Show quickly became a significant venue for the automotive world. The inaugural event attracted 17,000 visitors, with automakers eager to present their latest innovations. Despite a brief hiatus due to the economic crisis and World War I, the show resumed in 1923 and steadily grew in prominence. By its peak in 2005, nearly 750,000 enthusiasts attended, underscoring its importance as a premier destination for car aficionados and industry professionals alike.
Decline and Pandemic Impact
The show’s cancellation follows a notable decline in interest from both manufacturers and the public, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic’s devastating impact. The pandemic forced the event into a four-year hiatus, during which the auto industry faced unprecedented challenges. Upon its return earlier this year, the show featured just 37 exhibitors and drew 168,000 visitors—a significant drop from 2019’s 602,000 attendees and 184 exhibitors.
“It’s an extremely regrettable decision,” lamented Alexandre de Senarclens, president of the foundation behind the event. “The lack of interest from manufacturers, the competition from domestic shows in Paris and Munich, and the immense investments required to sustain the Geneva show have all contributed to this outcome.”
Moving Forward with the Qatar Edition
Despite the closure of the Geneva event, the GIMS is not entirely vanishing. Organizers confirmed that the Qatar edition of the show, launched successfully last year, will continue. “The Geneva International Motor Show Qatar will proceed as planned, with the next edition slated for November 2025 in Doha,” read a statement from the event’s foundation.
